E-M:/ committee adds money for out-of-state waste inspections

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

The Senate Appropriations Committee yesterday approved an amendment to
DEQ's fiscal year 2000 budget that would add $115,000 and two criminal
investigators to help inspect out-of-state waste shipments entering
Michigan and build cases against violators of Michigan waste standards.
Spot checks of waste shipped across state and international boundaries have
turned up hazardous and medical waste that does not belong in solid waste
landfills. The full Senate will take up S.B. 364 next week. The amendment
was offered by Senator Ken DeBeaussaert.
