E-M:/ senate oks deq budget with out-of-state waste inspectors

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

The State Senate yesterday approved next year's DEQ appropriations bill
(S.B. 364), which contains $115,000 for two criminal investigators to
assist with inspections of out-of-state waste entering Michigan. Earlier
checks in Michigan and other states have found hazardous or medical waste
shipped across state borders for disposal in so-called sanitary landfills.

The bill also contains $100,000 to implement any findings made by the
Michigan Environmental Science Board regarding tightening environmental
standards to protect children and $2 million for a new pollution prevention
loan program for businesses locating in brownfield redevelopment areas.

The House will take up the bill after the Easter recess and can address
these and any other issues in DEQ's budget. Final approval of the bill by
both houses will occur before the July summer recess.
