Enviro-Mich message from Michael Boyce <firstname.lastname@example.org>
Enclosed is information about a new list being formed by National Audubon
Society that deals specifically with efforts to curb sprawl and promote smart
growth. It comes on the heels of a new initiative gaining rapid bipartisan
support in Washington, Better American Bonds (BAB). These bonds would provide
yet another tool Michigan communities, and others across the nation could use
to protect open space, critical habitat, and restoration of brownfields.

> before it was lost to development?
> Subscribe to the Better America Bonds Mailing List TODAY and learn
> what you can do to help promote Better America Bonds, a new federal
> proposal to provide zero-interest environmental bonds to local
> communities to protect open space; learn how other communities around
> the country are financing open space; and provide input on the
> criteria for open-space financing tools such as Better America Bonds.
> WHO SHOULD JOIN
> Anyone involved in open space/green space planning and protection.
> HOW TO JOIN THIS MAILING LIST
> To be added to this list, send a message to LISTSERV@LIST.AUDUBON.ORG
> with the following command in the body of your message:
> SUBSCRIBE BABOND
> Once you join the list, you will receive further information on how to

> THIS LIST HAS FIVE PRIMARY GOALS:
> 1) to report and share information on the Better America Bonds
> proposal and its progress in obtaining Congressional approval, and to
> encourage subscribers to support its passage;
> 2) to circulate press and other coverage of the Better America Bonds
> proposal and other open space acquisition tools;
> 3) to report on local, state, and federal policies and politics of
> open space acquisition within the context of the urban sprawl debate;
> 4) to form a network of people who are working to save open spaces,
> and share stories and experiences about the places they are trying to
> protect and means for financing such projects;
> 5) to clarify and focus the purpose and criteria of public finance
> proposals to set aside open space, such as Better America Bonds.
> WHAT IS BETTER AMERICA BONDS?
> Better America Bonds is an ambitious federal budget proposal to help
> local communities combat urban and suburban sprawl, promote "smart
> growth" plans, and protect open spaces like wetlands, parks, critical
> habitat, and farmland through zero-interest environmental bonds,
> providing up-front financing for long-term protection. Local
> communities would have access to $9.5 billion in bond authority over
> the next five years to: purchase, restore, or enhance threatened open
> spaces, wetlands, and other habitats; protect water quality through
> land acquisitions or restoration; and provide funds to assess and
> clean up brownfields.
