E-M:/ National Forest Protection Alliance Seeking Volunteers

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings,

The National Forest Protection Alliance (NFPA) is looking for individuals in
Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) District (3rd) to work on the National Forest Protection
and Restoration Act (HR 1396). The NFPA also seeks and welcomes volunteers
throughout other Congressional Districts in Michigan as well.

On April 13, 1999, Congressman Jim Leach (R-IA) and Congresswoman Cynthia
McKinney (D-GA), along with 46 co-sponsors (including Michigan
Representatives Bonior, Conyers, and Rivers) responded to the public's call
for an end to public lands logging by introducing the National Forest
Protection and Restoration Act (HR 1396).

Intended to save taxpayer money, reduce the deficit, and cut corporate
welfare, the act would eliminate the commercial logging program on federal
lands and assists communities dependent on this program with economic
recovery and diversification.

In 1997 the commercial logging program in our National Forests cost American
taxpayers $1.2 billion. This number has been confirmed by the Congressional
Research Service.

The ecological consequences of the commercial timber program have risen well
beyond any dollar amount.
