E-M:/ Secty of State press conf on License Plates

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

Today MI Secty of State Candice Miller held a press conference announcing her
support for several different special license plates to support different

The announcement that the Secty. of State is supporting a wildlife habitat
protection plate along with the others was greeted with appreciation and
support by environmentalists who have worked for such a plate for more than
five years. Senator George McManus is the sponsor of this legislation. There
was some concern, however, about splitting the potential support among several
special plates. Projected income from special license plates could
potentially double the funding for the Michigan Non-game program, but that is
based on that plate being the only one offered.

All of the programs for which Miller expressed support for license plates,
including universities, clean water initiatives, child abuse prevention and
lighthouse preservation, are worthwhile, but the relative benefit to some of
those programs from the license plates is expected to be significantly less
proportionately than the potential benefit to the Natural Heritage program.

Miller's press conference included a number of leading Republican legislators,
giving a sense that her proposal will likely receive legislative approval.
Several bills have been introduced, including proposed license plates for
everything from cleaning up Lake St. Clair to cleaning up road killed deer.

It is not yet known when action will occur on these measures.
