Re: E-M:/ Meridian Twp.: Serving as a Bad Example Again

Enviro-Mich message from Thom Peterson <petersont@grps.k12.mi.us>

Worse than that: Ottawa County (west of Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan)
is the most diverse ag county in the state, ranking in the top five on
16 diff ag products, a $230 million/yr industry. For example the county
is growing the grain to feed its poultry and until this year has been
home to slaughter houses and processing plants --ie a complete food
production system within one area, very efficient-- yet it is poised to
kill the goose with a freeway(US-31 bypass)down through the middle of
the county instead of fixing the existing road.

This will of course open the rural center of the county to sprawling
residential and strip-mall development. The little towns are clammering
for it, and the County Commissioner who chairs the Committee on
Transportation and Land Use is the President of the Holland Home
Builders Association. Must be they've seen Oakland and Macomb and LIKE

The fox is in the hen house and all these local politicians are tucking
napkins under their chins instead of grabbing the shotgun.
