A poll of 600 registered voters shows they don't like some of Governor
Engler's plans for spending of the environmental bond money -- so DEQ is
blaming the pollster and environmental groups for the results.

The survey, professionally conducted May 24-27 by EPIC/MRA and commissioned
by MEC and several member groups, finds the following reactions to the
Engler plans, which are second under each question (although they were
rotated in order as the questions were actually put to voters):

#1

Use most of the clean water money to begin immediate cleanup and protection
of Lake St. Clair, Lake Superior and other Michigan waterways...55%

Spend half the clean-water money to monitor and test water quality over the
next 15 years...21%

#2

Spend almost $1 million to help reduce mercury, dioxins, and other toxic
emissions from incinerators and power plant smoke stacks...61%

Use almost $1 million in pollution prevention money to issue coupons to
people to buy new lawn mowers and outboard boat motors that produce less
pollution than the one they currently own...11%

#3

Spend $1 million of the $5 million (in lead money) to screen 30,000
children who are believed to be at the greatest risk of being exposed to
lead poisoning, and assure proper treatment for those who are found to have
lead poisoning, with the rest of the money being used to remove the threat
of lead poisoning from up to 800 homes....54%

Use all of the $5 million to remove the threat of lead poisoning from up to
1,000 homes throughout the state...20%

DEQ's reaction? The official line in today's Gongwer News Service is that
the poll uses "loaded words" like "toxic" substances.

The real question is whose ideas are loaded and sinking fast.
