E-M:/ Meridian Twp: What do you mean it can't get worse?

MONDAY, JULY 26TH
HEARING ON ELIMINATING MERIDIAN TWP'S URBAN SERVICES BOUNDARY
6:30 P.M., MERIDIAN TWP HALL, 5151 MARSH ROAD, OKEMOS (JUST NORTH OF MERIDIAN
MALL)

After the Governor's Club debacle in Meridian Twp. (Ingham County) which has
gotten extensive coverage here on Enviro-Mich, one might assume that the
downhill slide out of sound planning and zoning in this contentious community
would take a brief break. No such luck.

Screaming ahead of the pack to gain the title for falling the farthest off
the wagon of sound planning and zoning activities, Meridian Twp's Planning
Commission will consider either totally eliminating the Township's Urban
Services Boundary, or modifying it to include the lands of the largest
developers in the Twp. Talk about choosing the frying pan or the fire!

The irony is that this tool is just beginning to win favor elsewhere in
Michigan and around the country, and it is an essential part of overall sound
planning decisions. The Urban Services Boundary is part of the Meridian Twp.
Master Plan, adopted by the Planning Commission in the early 1990's. But once
the developers got control of the Twp. Board it was inevitable that a
challenge would be raised to this rational tool for reasonable growth. It is
also clear that they realize that they have to cram this ridiculous idea down
the throats of the Twp residents within the next year and one half, since any
fool can see that this Twp. Board is toast when voters get their shot at the
voting booth.

There is still hope that the people who make up the overwhelming majority of
residents and voters of Meridian Twp. will have their way and that reason
could be reinserted. The way that will happen will be in people who care show
up to say they care. And that includes those around Meridian Twp who will be
adversely influenced by the bad decisions -- from Williamstown Twp to the
east, Bath Twp to the north, East Lansing to the west and Alaiedon twp. to the
south. This is your fight too.
