E-M:/ Alert - Rider Threatens Michigan's Wetlands

Enviro-Mich message from "TONY DEFALCO" <DEFALCO@nwf.org>

Wetlands across America are threatened by a language on a funding bill that will be voted on by the U.S. House of Representatives THIS AFTERNOON, Tuesday, July 27. The anti-wetlands rider (1) lets developers sue federal agencies without first trying to get a permit, (2) spends millions of dollars on to expand a biased administrative appeals process that excludes the public, and (3) delays new rules would prevent the rubber-stamp approval of new home and business development in floodplain wetlands that inevitably flood, threatening lives and damaging property. Fortunately, Rep. Pete Visclosky of Indiana will offer an amendment to remove the damaging rider from the bill.

PLEASE CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY and urge them to support the Visclosky amendment to remove the anti-wetlands rider from the Energy and Water Appropriations bill when it is voted on this afternoon !

Of Michigan's estimated original 11,200,000 acres of wetlands, circa 1780, only 5,583,400 acres are estimated to remain as of the 1980s, a net loss of 50%. Call your representative today and let them know that Michigan's wetlands are not up for grabs. Those in the following districts are especially urged to call: Peter Hoekstra (MI-2), Vernon Ehlers (MI-3), Fred Upton (MI-6), Nick Smith (MI-7) and John Dingle (MI-16).
