E-M:/ West Michigan Smog Really Bad Tonight

At 10 PM EDT, Friday, 7/30/99, Michigan Department of Environmental 
Quality -- Air Quality Division -- Air Monitoring Unit
monitors are indicating that the Lake Michigan shoreline
is getting hit with record "VERY UNHEALTHY" ozone air pollution.

At 9 PM tonight, the highest one hour peak ozone reading in 
the last three years for all sites in the entire state was 
recorded as 161 ppb at Scottville, MI, near Ludington, a large
excursion over EPA's old health standard.

As of 11 PM tonight, the highest 8 hour average ozone reading
for the last three years for all sites in the entire state was 
recorded as 125 ppb in Muskegon, MI.

As of 9 PM EDT tonight, U.S.EPA's site, 
is showing the Lake Michigan shoreline from Scottville to 
Coloma as having the highest air pollution in the midwest
from MN to WV and MO to MI with the area shown around Muskegon 
as the only one having the highest "VERY UNHEALTHY" designation;  and
the largest geographical area with the "UNHEALTHY" 
designation even for otherwise healthy, active adults and 

I have placed EPA's midwest ozone movie for 7/30/99 until 9 PM at
for the next couple of days so you can view the Friday episode.
Purple denotes "very unhealth", red denotes "unhealth" and brown
is "unhealthy for sensitive individuals."

As of 10 pm, these Michigan sites are showing excursions
over the 8 hour health standard of 85 ppb:

112   Scottville
123   Muskegon
116  Holland
108  Coloma
85   Cassopolis
100  Detroit (E 7 Mile Road)
87   Warren

at 8 PM, Jenison, Mi showed a one hour peak of 118 ppb

Also, an air quality monitor in Windsor, Ontario was showing
poor air quality for ozone as of 4 PM this afternoon.
