E-M:/ Tri-State Oakland Co. Loop

Enviro-Mich message from Sue Julian <benj@tir.com>

Folks in the Oakland County Loop turned out in force at the first scoping
meeting and followed up with written comments and site visits with the FERC
team. The result now appears to be that the wetlands destruction will be
greatly minimized if the new recommended route is chosen in the Final EIS.
Letters are needed one last time to support Tri-State's decision to use an
alternate route south of Michigan Nature Association's Timberland and Big
Valley Sanctuaries (called Huron Swamp complex and Buckhorn Lake complex)
in the Draft EIS. The proposed alternate route in Oakland County avoids
the fens, crosses less wooded area, and follows existing overhead utility
lines for much of the route. It does, however, cross a narrow headwaters
stream, which Tri-State says it will work on a plan to minimize the
negative impact. All in all we are pleased with the strong showing of
activism and the response from Tri-State. What happened or is proposed
along other sections of the pipeline route, we don't know, so the heads up
to those other counties is still needed.
