                     T O U R   d e   S P R A W L:
          The West Michigan Sierra Club along with the WMEAC,
     Center for Environmental Study and Michigan State University
  sponsors the 1st Annual Tour covering areas in Grand Rapids, Kentwood,
         Caledonia Township, City of Walker and Alpine Township

WHAT:    The Sierra Club along with other local environmental groups
          announces its 1st Annual Tour de Sprawl.  The tour is kicked
          off in downtown Grand Rapids with a breakfast including keynote
          speakers John Logie (Mayor of Grand Rapids), Andy Bowman (Blueprint
          Director of Grand Valley Metro Council) and Rep. William Byl.
          Participants will tour by coach buses and learn about urban sprawl,
          farmland preservation, smart growth, wildlife habitat, urban re-
          development and other topics from the various speakers & specialists
          on the tour.  Scheduled stops will be made to past and proposed
          development projects in the Grand Rapids area to demonstrate the
          choices government and individuals make every day that can either
          contribute to the growth or to the prevention of sprawl.  Interested

           8:00AM Breakfast at 151 Fountain Applied Tech Center Rm 120
           8:30AM Keynote Speakers also in Applied Tech Center
           9:30AM Heartside...first scheduled stop
          10:15AM Proposed Alaska Park on the Thornapple River..2nd stop
          11:10AM Alpine Township (Peach Ridge & 7 Mile)...3rd stop
          12 NOON Return to the Applied Tech Center

WHERE:  Beginning and ending at the Grand Rapids Community College's Applied
         Technology Center, 151 Fountain NW in Rooms 120, 122 & 124.  Parking
         is available in the lot below the Applied Tech Center or in the GR
         Community College parking lot.

WHO:    Keynote Speakers:  Mayor John Logie, Andy Bowman & Rep William Byl,
         Tour Route Speakers: Glen Swier (Heartside Ministries), Sandy Parker
         (Eastown Community), Sharon Steffens (Alpine Township Supervisor),
         Roger Sabine (Supervisor of Kent County Parks), Steve Heacock (Kent
         County Commissioner), Thom Peterson (Pres of WMEAC) along with other
         speakers as well.
