Community Vigil for Environmental Justice at Henry Ford Hospital
Community and environmental groups protesting pollution from the Henry Ford
Hospital incinerator will stage a candlelight Vigil for Environmental
Justice, Thursday, October 14 at the Henry Ford Hospital, 2799 West Grand
Boulevard, Detroit. The vigil is scheduled from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
"We are asking the Henry Ford Health System Board of Trustees to 'do the
right thing' and stop burning their trash in Detroit," said Anna Holden,
spokesperson for the Coalition to Stop Incineration at Henry Ford Hospital.
"The Board of Trustees is meeting October 15 to discuss this issue. We
are urging them to step up recycling and use a less polluting process to
sterilize medical waste. The Hospital has failed the EPA stack test for
cadmium releases even though pollution controls were added last spring."
"Henry Ford's hospitals in Grosse Pointe Farms and Wyandotte don't burn
their wastes," said Donele Wilkins, Director, Detroiters Working for
Environmental Justice. "It's a matter of justice for the people of
Detroit. Henry Ford Hospital should protect the health of Detroiters as
well as the health of suburban communities." Wilkins pointed out that the
childhood asthma rate in the area around Henry Ford Hospital is at least
three times the rate in Wayne County outsied Detroit. "Asthma rates of
African American children are increasing -- this has to stop."
The Vigil will begin across the street from Henry Ford Hospital at the
corner of West Grand Boulevard and Sterling.
