E-M:/ Michigan protection comes with Clintons announcement yesterday

Enviro-Mich message from Frank Ambrose <fambrose@bloomington.in.us>

Here is a brief update on the amount protected. The source is the AP:

Preliminary estimates of roadless areas affected by the executive order
include 74,043 acres in Wisconsin's Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest,
79,845 acres in Minnesota's Chippewa and Superior national forests ,
168,368 acres in Michigan's Hiawatha, Huron-Manistee and Ottawa national
forests and 49,193 acres in Illinois' Shawnee National Forest and Midewin

The plan initially affects roadless swaths of 5,000 acres or more. It could
eventually be expanded to 10 million to 15 million acres in parcels
smaller than 5,000 acres.

It needs no congressional approval. The plan will be guided by regulations
to be issued by the U.S. Forest Service after an environmental review and
public comments.
