Anyone interested of seeing an example of where the issues of organized
labor and environmental justice intersect should check out this week's
issue of the Metro Times. the cover story takes an in-depth look at the
attempt by workers at Peerless Metal Powders and Abrasives in Detroit.
The employees at this factory were fighting not just for better wages,
but also an improvement of working conditions they equate to "working in
a coal mine." It is not just a problem for the workers. The factory is
located in a dirt-poor neighborhood where residents complain of the
smoke and dust pouring out of the factory and rolling down the street
"like a low-lying cloud." The story, title Frank Johnson's Union Dues,"
can be found on our Web site at http://www.metrotimes.com/
