E-M:/ Upcoming National Forest Hearings in Michigan

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

There are two sets of major hearings/meetings occurring in Michigan
regarding major National Forest issues during the month of December.
**First, a hearing will be held in Grayling on December 1 to take input
into a proposal for revising the rules that govern the Planning activities
on National Forests nationwide. Grayling is one of a handful of sites
around the nation where these hearings are being held:
December 1, 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Grayling -- Hearing on
Proposed Rules for National Forest Planning
Final comments on the proposed Rule are due January 4, and the comments can
be downloaded from the web at www.fs.fed.us/forum/nepa/rule along with
 additional information
**Second, every National Forest in the country will be holding an
"information meeting" on the Roadless Area Environmental Impact Study that
has been announced by President Clinton. Here are the dates and locations
 for these meetings in Michigan:
     Ottawa National Forest, (western UP) December 13, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
at the Ewen Town Hall in Ewen, MI
Huron Manistee National Forest, (lower peninsula) December 16 at 6
p.m. at Bill Oliver's Best Western in Cadillac, MI
Hiawatha National Forest, (eastern UP) December 16 at 4 to 8 p.m. at
     Manistique High School
These meetings are to take input into what the Forest Service should
consider in the course of preparing a environmental impact statement on
roadless area management both in Michigan and nationwide. A web site with
the Forest Service press release on this issue is available at
www.fs.fed.us/news/19991025.html or for more details on any of these
 issues contact the Sierra Club.
