E-M:/ Friends of Lake Superior:

Enviro-Mich message from "Martha Waszak" <WASZAKM@state.mi.us>

As part of the continuing effort to restore and protect the Lake Superior basin, the partners in the Lake Superior Binational Program have released a draft Lakewide Management Plan for public review. This planning document outlines a number of activities that will be undertaken to reduce or eliminate sources of pollution to the Lake Superior basin.

Governor Engler as well as the other Lake Superior State governors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator endorsed the Lake Superior Binational Program in 1991. One of the goals of this program is to achieve zero discharge and emission of certain persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic substances to the basin. The draft Lakewide Management Plan identifies activities that will be undertaken to move us toward this goal.

Participants in the Lake Superior Binational Program include federal, state, provincial and local governments; tribal organizations, the Lake Superior Binational Forum, business, industry, universities, environmental groups and others. Comments will be sought on this draft document until January 10, 2000.

Copies of the draft Lake Superior Lakewide Management Plan are available from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. You may request copies from:
