LAST CALL ALERT ON SB 205-- HOUSE COULD VOTE IN LAST TWO DAYS

     Friends:

First, my profound thanks to the hundreds of you who have taken time
to talk with your legislators about SB 205, the bill that would seek
to eliminate entirely local control over all agricultural operations,
including livestock factories! The bill slowed to a snail's pace
because of the outcry, but in the last 2 days of the session bizarre
deals far too often get made.

This is a CRITICAL time to reenforce with your STATE REPRESENTATIVE
that this bill STINKS and should be voted down.

The Proponents of the "roll the red carpet out for hog hotels"
legislation SB 205 are FRANTICALLY trying to get the Michigan
Townships Association to go along with a compromise. So far, god
bless 'em, the Townships have said NO WAY!! The big question will be
whether the Farm Bureau and the Engler Administration can figure out a
way to give a little but still get their way on this bill.

The information we are getting says a couple of key things:

First, legislators are hearing a lot from home, but THEY NEED TO HEAR
MORE. Reiteration of concern, calling to find out status and explain
that this bill can't be fixed, it needs to be killed, are very timely
     right now.

Second, as so often happens in the halls and lobbies of the
Legislature, like a politically charged game of "whisper down the
lane", the truth gets bent as it moves along. We are already hearing
some legislators who think a deal has been struck with MTA (NOT TRUE),
and others who are hearing that the opposition is just being obstinate
and trying to block the bill instead of agree to reasonable changes
(YEAH, RIGHT). Dispelling those insidious rumors are important.

SO, PLEASE take a few moments, call your State Representative NOW, for
the first time or the tenth time -- it is critical to get the message
across that SB 205 is a stinker and if passed they will be up to their
elbows in manure with their constituents!

     Anne Woiwode
