The Lake Huron Initiative Stakeholder Workshop will be held January 24, 2000 at the Thomas Edison Inn in Port Huron, Michigan.

The Lake Huron Initiative has developed a draft Action Plan for Lake Huron. The Action Plan identifies critical issues and actions of importance to the protection and restoration of Lake Huron.

The purpose of the workshop is to identify actions necessary to ensure meeting our goal of "restoring and maintaining the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the waters, tributaries, and nearshore terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of Lake Huron" and to set priorities for future actions.

Issues that will be discussed include proposed actions to reduce eleven critical pollutants including PCBs, dioxin, chlordane, and sediment. Proposed actions regarding fish populations & habitat such as fish community objectives, sea lamprey control, exotics, the benthic community, tributaries, coastal wetlands, nearshore areas, and Biodiversity Investment Areas will also be discussed with future priorities identified by the workshop participants.

The outcome of the workshop will be recommendations for moving forward toward a better understanding of key environmental and natural resource issues of Lake Huron from bi-national state, provincial, federal, and local perspectives.

The workshop is sponsored by the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes; U.S. EPA; Environment Canada; Great Lakes Fishery Commission; Michigan Departments of Environmental Quality, Natural Resources and Agriculture; and the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation.
