coordinator in Brooks Twsp, Newaygo County

Brooks Township Land Use Vision

The purpose of the project is to establish and conduct a major community
education and outreach program intended to increase voluntary participation
in conservation efforts and encourage stewardship of our unique natural

Project Coordinator
Brooks Township, Newaygo County, Michigan seeks a part-time temporary
employee to coordinate implementation of the Land Use Vision.  It is
anticipated that the position will require 25 to 30 hours work per week
during calendar 2000. This individual will coordinate the work of partner
agencies and serve as local contact for landowners.  A major task will be
to create educational programs and materials for the public schools and
various groups or associations within the Township.   Duties include
implementation of marketing and communications programs to keep
conservation issues in the public eye and developing a database of
conservation information (library) at the Township Hall. 

To be considered, a candidate must possess exceptional organizational and
communication skills.  The position requires an enthusiastic self-starter
able to work efficiently and effectively with minimum supervision.  It is
important that the candidate be able to establish rapport and credibility
with our adult population, public school staff and school-aged children.
Local residency is a plus.  Must provide own transportation.

We prefer a candidate with a degree in environmental science, natural
resources management or similar, plus experience in environmental education
and/or recruiting volunteer action groups.

The position will receive direction from Project Steering Committee and
supervision from Township Supervisor.  Duties to include:

 Develop conservation programs targeted at individual property owners,
i.e. water quality and land management
 Recruit and train adult volunteers to lead and/or participate in
conservation and stewardship programs
 Gather and/or create educational programs and materials for adults
 Coordinate work of partner agencies (i.e. The Nature Conservancy, US
Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Soil Conservation,
Land Conservancy of West Michigan, etc.)
 Collaborate with Newaygo Public Schools educators to develop ways to
include appreciation for and stewardship of Brooks Township's natural
features in the  K-12 curriculum
 Gather and/or create educational materials for students
 Establish a lending library of relevant environmental information
 Serve as local contact for landowners
 Develop funding sources for habitat restoration projects and educational
 Publicize the LUV implementation throughout its first year using
newspapers and Township newsletter
 Help recruit a cadre of volunteers to carry on the work of the project
beyond year one
 Report as directed to Project Steering Committee
 Carry out other related responsibilities deemed necessary by the Township

Note: The Project Coordinator will be a temporary employee of the Township,
with a 12 month contract beginning early Year 2000.  With additional
funding, the contract may be extended.
