WETLANDS PERMIT HEARING
being held by MDEQ
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22
7 P.M.
Meridian Twp. Hall, 5151 Marsh Road, Okemos

Hey folks, if you are fed up with commercialism this holiday season, you can
attend a hearing being held by DEQ regarding a wetlands permit for a site in
Meridian Twp. where Wal*Mart wants to put a store! Not only can you direct
your own time away from consumption, you can help try to stop the building
of another store for, if I understand it correctly, the country's largest
retailer!

While Meridian Twp's. Planning Commission has granted three special use
permits for the proposed Wal*Mart and associated out buildings, and the Twp.
Board denied requests by a large number of citizens to appeal the decisions
on the SUP, the proposals are dependent on receipt of all required permits
by the appropriate agencies. It is our understanding that MDEQ has actually
DENIED the wetlands permit application for this site because the applicant
had not provided enough information. Apparently, there are a lot more
wetlands out there than were disclosed on the application.

The hearing is being held in response to a request by citizens, but one
thing we DON'T know is whether there will be a chance to further comment on
the application if the applicants finally get around to submitting all the
required information. There will be requests made that in fact such an
opportunity occur.

For those who are not able to attend the hearing, there is reportedly a 15
day opportunity after the hearing to submit comments. Unfortunately, I
don't have all the details on how to submit comments, but will post that
once it is in hand.
