Ecology Center Honors Five Environmental Leaders

At its annual membership meeting yesterday, the Ecology Center honored five Michigan residents with the organization's annual awards for environmental leadership. The five winners were:

Doug Cowherd
Cowherd has served as the volunteer co-chair of the Sierra Club's Huron Valley Group for the past decade. During that time, he has guided the Club to play an increasingly prominent role in public affairs. In the past two years, he has played a pivotal role in several important local land use debates, and, in 1999, he was the chief organizer of the successful Ann Arbor parkland acquisition campaign to save natural areas.

Marilyn & Ed Couture
Of 200 activists who worked on the 1999 Ann Arbor parks campaign, Marilyn and Ed Couture distinguished themselves through the sheer magnitude of their work. They collected over 900 petition signatures in four weeks last summer to help qualify the proposal for the ballot.

Stuart Batterman
Batterman is a University of Michigan public health professor who works in the field of environmental health. He has provided technical assistance to communities around the country, and has worked in Flint, Detroit, and Ann Arbor to protect and improve air quality. In 1999, he advised projects to improve southeast Michigan air quality monitoring network and to reassess the University of Michigan Hospital's waste disposal methods.

Dave Dempsey
Since the early 1980s, Dempsey has been Michigan's leading public interest advocate for environmental protection. The former executive director of both the Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) and Clean Water Action, and the former environmental advisor to Governor James Blanchard, he has most recently worked as MEC Policy Director. He is now completing a book on the history of environmental protection in Michigan.

The Ecology Center is a regional nonprofit organization which promotes a just and healthy environment through grassroots organizing, education, advocacy, and demonstration projects. The Center is also the parent organization of Recycle Ann Arbor.
