Job Announcement
Environmental Justice Organizer, Detroit
Michigan Sierra Club


The Sierra Club's Mackinac Chapter is seeking to fill the newly established position of Environmental Justice Organizer located in Detroit. The successful candidate will have the vision, commitment, and skills to bring
people and communities together to advance the cause of environmental justice.

This grant-funded position offers the right individual the opportunity to assist people of color and economically disadvantaged communities in efforts to obtain environmental equity. It also offers the opportunity to help integrate the goals of the Sierra Club's Environmental Justice Campaign into the Sierra Club's work in Michigan and the midwest and within the national organization.

The Sierra Club is a national non-profit, member-supported, public interest organization that promotes environmental protection at local, state and national levels. The Mackinac Chapter serves Michigan.

Job responsibilities: collaborate in development and implementation of strategy for specific environmental justice campaigns in metro Detroit; organize grassroots involvement in campaigns, drawing on groups and communities including the Sierra Club; participate in coalition and network building around environmental justice issues; assist in developing public education and media strategies for environmental justice issues; represent the Sierra Club to the public and the media; work cross-culturally to link activists and groups with the Sierra Club in communities facing
environmental injustice; educate and train volunteer environmental justice leaders; organize events; facilitate Sierra Club involvement with the environmental justice movement; and be available up to 20% of time to travel outside of southeast Michigan to meet with Sierra Club volunteers, leaders and staff and to provide organizing assistance to communities.

Qualifications: Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills; 3 years' experience in grassroots organizing, campaign planning and working with volunteers in the environmental justice, community organizing or labor arenas or a bachelor's degree in a related field with some organizing experience; ability to link people of color and low income community groups with a predominantly European American environmental organization; general knowledge of environmental justice issues; writing skills. Other desirable skills: proficient computer skills for word processing, production of printed materials, database and communications uses. Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time.
