E-M:/ MDA Hearing on GAAMPs - one week notice

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

These GAAMPs on Cranberries and Care of Farm Animals may be of
interest to Enviro-Mich folks, but I note this in particular because
again the Mich Dept of Agriculture is giving very short notice about
hearings on GAAMPs. With the Manure Management GAAMPs needing to be
approved before SB 205 kicks in in June, I hope the MDA doesn't
expect people to track down and get hold of a copy of the draft
GAAMPs and make intelligent and comprehensive comments within the one
week notice given for these hearings on other GAAMPs. Anne Woiwode

Michigan Commission of Agriculture sets public comment meeting on GAAMPs
 for cranberries, animal care

The Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) today announced it will
receive public comments on the 2000 drafts of the Generally Accepted
Agricultural and Management Practices (GAAMPs) for Cranberry Production
and Care of Farm Animals on Friday, February 25 at 2 p.m. in the Pridgeon
Room, 4th floor, Ottawa Building, located at 611 W. Ottawa St., in
 downtown Lansing.

The Michigan Right to Farm Act provides guidelines under which a farm or
farm operation shall not be found to be a public or private nuisance. In
order to have this protection, the farm or farm operation must conform to
GAAMPs, which are set by the Michigan Commission of Agriculture. GAAMPs
are reviewed annually by the Commission and revised as necessary.

For a copy of the proposed revisions to the Cranberry Production and Care
of Farm Animals GAAMPs, please contact MDA's Environmental Stewardship
Division at (517) 241-0236. Written comments may be submitted to MDA, P.O.
Box 30017, Lansing, MI 48909, or by e-mail to Dave Charney at
 charneyd@state.mi.us by 5 p.m. on February 25, 2000.
