30 Days Before the Celebration of the 30th Earth Day Michigan Voters Demand
Better Enforcement of Air and Water Protections

Thirty years after the first Earth Day, Michigan voters say they want
tougher air and water protections and better enforcement of the
environmental laws already on the books, according to a poll published by
the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund. The poll also found that
eighty-two percent of Michigan voters believe that they can have a clean
environment and a strong economy at the same time. Of the 16% who say we
must choose, 56% choose the environment.

"Voters obviously want strong laws and tougher environmental enforcement to
protect Michigan's water and air," said Lisa Wozniak, Great Lakes Regional
Director of the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund. "The results
of this poll also absolutely show that people understand a good environment
supports a good economy," she added.

On specific questions about Michigan's rivers, lakes and air quality - the
results strongly favor tough protections for these natural resources.

- Ninety -four percent (68% strongly, 26% somewhat) favor having tougher
enforcement of existing laws to protect Michigan rivers and lakes from
pollution.

- Eighty-seven percent (58% strongly, 29% somewhat) favor creating tougher
laws to protect Michigan rivers and lakes from pollution.

- Eighty-two percent (53% strongly, 29% somewhat) favor creating tougher
laws to protect drinking water in Michigan.

- Eighty-nine percent (59% strongly, 30% somewhat) favor having tougher
enforcement of existing laws to protect drinking water in Michigan.

- Seventy-five percent (35% strongly, 40% somewhat) favor creating tougher
laws to protect air quality in Michigan.

- Eighty-six percent (51% strongly, 35% somewhat) favor tougher enforcement
of existing laws to protect air quality.

METHODOLOGY

This memo is based on the findings of a telephone survey conducted by
Bennett, Petts and Blumenthal between January 3 to 10, 2000. Twelve hundred
(1200) likely November 2000 general election voters in the State of Michigan
were selected at random and interviewed by trained, professional telephone
interviewers. The margin of error for the overall survey results is 2.8
points.
