GREEN PARTY RALLY WITH WINONA LADUKE, FRIDAY MARCH 24

The Green Party of Michigan will be hosting a public rally with
Winona LaDuke at the Ann Arbor Pow Wow on Friday, March 24 at
5:30 pm. The event will occur in the upper level seating area,
roughly above the Winona's Muskrat table. All are invited,
including Greens, media, and anyone interested in seeing Green
candidates on our November ballot in Michigan.

Winona LaDuke is Ralph Nader's running mate in the bid to win the
Green Party presidential nomination at the party's national
convention in Denver in June. She is the founder of the White
Earth Land Recovery Project, dedicated to recovering land within
the White Earth reservation where the logging industry clear-cut
much of the land. She also founded the Indigenous Women's
Network, and has served on the board of directors of Greenpeace
USA. In March of 1994 she was nominated by Time Magazine as one
of the "50 leaders of the Future".

LaDuke has published many articles and books; her most recent is
ALL OUR RELATIONS; NATIVE STRUGGLES FOR LAND AND LIFE.
In this book LaDuke, a member of the Anishinaabeg nation,
describes how a series of treaties and U.S. laws transferred land
from the Anishinaabeg to incoming settlers and converted commonly
held Anishinaabeg land into individual parcels, with much of it
soon alienated from Anishinaabeg (and a huge chunk taken by the
state of Minnesota, illegally, for taxes).

The big winners in the process were Frederick Weyerhaueser and
the company he created. "Some are made rich and some are made
poor," LaDuke writes. "In 1895, White Earth 'neighbor' Frederick
Weyerhaueser owned more acres of timber than anyone else in the
world." Today, descendant companies of Weyerhaueser continue to
clearcut what remains of the Minnesota pine forests.

Other opportunities to hear Ms. LaDuke while she is in Ann Arbor
are:

* Book-signing at Border's Books, Arborland Mall, Thurs 3/23 7pm

* WUOM Radio interview, Todd Mundt Show, Sun 3/26 noon

* Book-signing at Shaman Drum Bookstore, Sun 3/26 3-4pm

* Also, Ms. LaDuke will be available for interviews much of the
time at the Pow Wow (Fri 7-10pm, Sat 11am-10pm, Sun 11am-6pm,
except for the Sunday events listed above)

The Green Party of Michigan is now circulating petitions to put
Green Party candidates on the ballot for the first time in
Michigan. The basic principles of the Greens platform are:
Social Justice, Grassroots Democracy, Ecological Wisdom, and
Nonviolence.
