E-M:/ Protest Saturday to Shut Down Continental Aluminum

------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enviro-Mich message from Mary Beth Doyle -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello All!

Please consider stopping by to support the community and pass along to others.

Continental Aluminum, the notorious Aluminum recycling/smelting company which was forced out of Detroit a few years ago, has resurfaced in the small community of New Hudson thanks in part to a $5.5 million tax exempt bond from the MEDC. For over two years the plant has emited large quanitities of hydrogen flouride, hydrogen chloride, and chlorides on the community, including a local Elementary school 1/2 mile from the plant. Nieghbors have complained of various health impacts from burning eyes and blurred vision to various breathing disorders including asthma.

Recent testing has shown that the plant may have been emitting up to 300% its permitted levels of Hydrogen Chloride into the community since it started operation. The plant has been cited several times for 901 violations and this week the DEQ cited them for violating their permit limits HCL and HF. Local residents have called for the DEQ / EPA to immediately shut the plant down and conduct a complete investigation of the plants emissions.
