E-M:/ DNR Open House on Keweenaw Land Exchange

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

On MONDAY April 10, 7 p.m. at Suomi College in Hancock, the Michigan DNR
will hold an open house to get public input on the proposal to exchange
land owned by the Lake Superior Land company (a subsidiary of Champion
Paper Company) at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula with State Forest land
in the Copper Country State Forest in the area of the Otter River, on the
border of Houghton and Ontonagon Counties.
The DNR says the meeting is to get info from public about this exchange to
be used by an internal DNR committee which is currently reviewing the
proposal for a land exchange. The committee is expected to release its
report at the end of April. The open house will open with a presentation
about the lands, including slides about the DNR lands. There will also be
an overview of the process the DNR uses for considering and processing an
application for land exchanges. Then, the public will be invited to talk
one on one with DNR staff stationed at tables around the room. The
comments will be gathered and the committee will consider the input.
I also understand Lake Superior Land Company will have a table at the open
house as well, although they will NOT be making a presentation.
For more information about the event, you can contact the Michigan DNR --
I spoke to the Marquette Office at 906-228-6561.
