Job Announcement: Please Post

TITLE: Program Assistant/Adopt-A-Stream Program, Grand Rapids, MI
ORGANIZATION: West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 12, 2000
HIRE DATE: May 26, 2000

Adopt-A-Stream Program Description:
Adopt-A-Stream is a stream clean-up, monitoring and restoration program, the
activities of which are carried out by local volunteers concerned about
streams. The volunteers vary in their biological and ecological
understanding of the resources they care for and vary in energy and
commitment from group to group. This means that sometimes they require
cheerleading, sometimes education, sometimes goal setting.

The Adopt-A-Stream program has some 40 groups working on streams throughout
Kent, Ottawa and adjacent counties. The program has been part of WMEAC since
1991 and we desire that it continue to grow, as there are hundreds of miles
of stream in Kent County alone that are not adopted. This position will
require both outdoor and in-office work, as well as travel and making
presentations to groups, businesses and schools about the program.
Position Responsibilities:

Teach groups of stream volunteers methods of macro-invertebrate and
chemical monitoring, stream corridor monitoring and stream enhancement
techniques
Assist groups with monitoring techniques, equipment use, quality control
measures and data analysis
Collecting and managing information and equipment
 Maintain correspondence with AAS participants
Assist with raising support funds for the program
Promote the program through the media and other outlets
The Program Coordinator, who has been overseeing Adopt-A-Stream, will be
available to work with the Program Assistant as necessary.
Desired Background/Talents:
Experience and/or interest in working with volunteers
Background in stream ecology preferred, and general biology/ecology as a
minimum
Field experience and stream research or restoration helpful
Strong written and oral communication skills
 Computer competence
 History of leadership and initiative
Strong commitment to the protection and restoration of water resources
Time Requirements:
Position will be 20 hrs. per week for the next year, expandable based on
additional funding
Hourly rate: $8.50 - $10.50/ hr to start

Please send resume and cover letter to: Tom Cary, West Michigan
Environmental Action Council, 1432 Wealthy St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506.
