E-M:/ Public Rally to Oppose Harding's Secret Meeting

Enviro-Mich message from James Clift <jamesmec@voyager.net>

Public Rally to be Held Opposing Efforts to Gut the Clean Air Act

According to memos and articles that appeared in the Detroit News and
Washington Post, Russ Harding, Director of the Department of
Environmental Quality, is pulling together a secret meeting with
environmental regulators and utility/industry representatives to talk
about how to weaken the Clean Air Act under a new EPA administration.
Members of the public and environmental groups are barred from the

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 27, starting at 9:00 a.m.
at the Marriot Hotel at Detroit Metro Airport. We are planning to hold
a rally outside the hotel at the same time to highlight the
inappropriate nature of the meeting.

MEC believes that:

1. Harding, the Director of the MDEQ, should stop spending state funds
to protect the utility industry that is polluting our air, and poisoning
our water with mercury.

2. Harding should be concentrating his efforts on protecting public
health and the environment, not fighting federal efforts to protect us.

3. No taxpayer money should be used for meetings that are political in
nature. If John Engler wants to someone's presidential campaign, that
is fine. However, he should be reminded that he doesn’t have the
resources of the state available to assist him in his effort.
