ALERT: Bete Grise Public Hearing - May 1, Mohawk, MI

Here's your opportunity to speak up for an invaluable resource - an unspoiled Great Lakes coastal wetland and shoreline. On the shore of Lake Superior near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula is Bete Grise. Here, the Lake Superior Land Company has applied to the MDEQ and the Army Corps of Engineers for permission to build a road over a wetlands (and eventually develop the land for condos). Twice thus far the company has been denied a permit.

NWF recently submitted comments requesting a public hearing on the company's most recent re-application for permission. A summary of those comments follows. If you would like a complete copy of NWF's comments, please e-mail defalco@nwf.org

Please attend the upcoming public hearing and speak out in defense of an invaluable Lake Superior habitat. Here are the details:

What: Public Hearing on proposal to fill in wetlands adjacent to Lake Superior, Bete Grise South, Grant Township, Keweenaw County, Public Notice #99-038-001-0M/98-1-248

Where: The school in Mohawk, Michigan (25 miles north of Houghton)

When: Monday, May 1, 7:00 pm

*Summary of NWF comments*
1. The MDEQ and the Corps should deny this permit in order to protect a vanishing Great Lakes resource: coastal wetlands.

2. The MDEQ and the Corps should review information gathered by the Lake Superior Habitat Committee to assess the importance of the affected resource.

3. The permit applicant has submitted insufficient information to determine the impacts of the proposed permit.

4. The permit should be denied because the proposed mitigation wetlands are unlikely to provide the same functions as the affected wetlands.

5. The permit should be denied as contrary to the EPA's guidelines for wetlands permits because among other reasons, there are other alternatives that do not require destruction of a wetland.

6. The Corps and the MDEQ should deny the permit because it would not be in the public interest.
