The Great Lakes Forests and International Trade Agreements
WHEN: 9:00am, Friday, June 16, 2000
WHERE: Madison, Wisconsin
Madison Area Technical College (MATC, downtown conference center), 211 North
Carroll Street, Room 240D
This daylong public workshop will provide a comprehensive examination of the
transboundary threats international trade agreements pose to the Great Lakes
Forest Ecosystem.á The North American Free Trade Agreement, the World Trade
Organization and the Softwood Lumber Agreement will be critically assessed and
opportunities for citizen networking and input surrounding international trade
agreements will be discussed.
Speakers and Topics Include:
Tom Buchele from the Environmental Law and Policy Center and Jerry DeMarco from
Sierra Legal Defence Fund will present discussion on legal mechanisms to protect
migratory birds in forested areas including an examination of the Migratory
Birds Treaty, the treaty's implementing legislation and regulations in the U.S.
and Canada and recent enforcement efforts.
Antonia Juhasz from American Lands Alliance will present discussion on the
potential, current and historical impact of trade agreements on forest
ecosystems. She will also discuss how grassroots efforts can impact these
processes.
Dan Seligman from the Sierra Club will be speaking on the technical details of
multinational trade agreements, in particular the North American Free Trade
Agreement and the World Trade Organization.
Joe Scott from the Northwest Ecosystem Alliance will present a case study of a
lawsuit submitted by the Alliance on the US admission into the Softwood Lumber
Agreement and the need for compliance with and application of the National
Environmental Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act to this agreement.
Michelle Swenarchuk from the Canadian Environmental Law Association will present
the Canadian perspective of the Softwood Lumber Agreement and its impacts on
Canadian forests. She will also discuss where the agreement may be headed with
the current renegotiation process, and what environmental protection provisions
need to be included in the renegotiated agreement.
This workshop is being organized on behalf of the Great Lakes Forest
Coalition, with the efforts of Great Lakes United, The Sierra Club and The
Wildlands League.
This workshop is free and open to all interested in gaining depth of knowledge
on the trade agreements that impact our forests and what we can do to ensure
that these lands are protected. For a detailed agenda, more information, or to
