E-M:/ recycle ann arbor executive director dies

Enviro-Mich message from mike garfield <michaelg@ecocenter.org>

I am very sorry to let you know that Bruce MacKay, the executive director
of Recycle Ann Arbor, died of leukemia on Friday. He was 35 years old.

Bruce was hired only three months ago to lead RAA, the state's largest
community-based recycling organization. He had previously worked as an
environmental consultant in northern California. He and his wife Jennifer
had moved to Michigan last fall, as she started a Ph.D. program at the
University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment. In
his brief tenure at RAA, Bruce jump-started efforts to double the size of
the organization's ReUse Center, expand commercial recycling in Washtenaw
County, and showcase RAA's EnHouse green building demonstration center.

Like many of the early-day recyclers, Bruce understood the connection
between municipal recycling programs and grassroots environmental action.
He was recently elected to the board of directors of the East Michigan
Environmental Action Council, and had attended several general meetings of
the Sierra Club's Huron Valley Group.

Bruce was an energetic, talented, and high-spirited man who made friends
rapidly, and who greatly impressed his professional colleagues in his brief
time on the job. He was hospitalized last Tuesday, diagnosed Wednesday
with acute leukemia, and he died early Friday morning. Like his family and
friends, I am overwhelmed by the speed with which his cancer overcame him.
Our hearts go out to his wife, their families, and to his friends and
colleagues who knew him well.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the
Earth Island Institute, 300 Broadway, Suite 28, San Francisco, CA 94133.
Condolences can be sent to the family in care of Recycle Ann Arbor, 2420 S.
Industrial, Ann Arbor, MI 48104, or by email in care of Tim Brownell, RAA
interim director, at tbrownell@recycleannarbor.org.
