E-M:/ CHANGE IN HEARING DATE on Timber mandate

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee has CHANGED THE DATE OF THE
HEARING on the DNR Budget bill to WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 1 p.m., in Room
     404 of the Capitol Building.
This meeting will almost certainly result in the DNR Budget being
passed out of the Subcommittee because the full Appropriations
Committee is expected to meet the following week to consider the bill.
It is normal for a hearing/meeting like this to be somewhat
superfluous because the Subcommittee will likely have struck all of
the deals about language changes before they get to the meeting,
especially after all of the testimony they have received on the timber
mandate language. Therefore, if ANYONE wants to try to have influence
or input they really need to contact the legislators in advance of the
hearing. Testimony is nice, but should not be relied on to make your
The issues: Right now, the DNR Budget Bill HB 5281 is as it came out
of the House, but there are some discussions about changing the
language on the timber mandate slightly. The changes would most
likely simply reduce or mitigate the mandate to mark and offer for
sale timber from state lands, rather than remove this noxious mandate
entirely. The DNR is likely to agree to language that mitigates the
Sierra Club continues to call for elimination of the mandate entirely
-- the DNR budget is NO PLACE to make such sweeping policy decisions
that effect our entire State Forest system.
