MICHIGAN NATURAL RESOURCES TRUST FUND
NOMINATIONS FOR STATE ACQUISITION DUE JULY 1

        LANSING--Nominations recommending a particular
property for state acquisition and ownership under the
Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) are being
accepted by the Department of Natural Resources until July
1, 2000.
Nominations received by the deadline will be compiled
by the DNR Grants Administration Division and provided to
the DNR land-managing divisions, including Wildlife, Forest
Management, Parks and Recreation and Fisheries for
consideration. If the property is determined to be a high
priority for DNR ownership, the division may submit an
application for MNRTF assistance to acquire the property.

Individuals interested in nominating a property for
DNR ownership should keep in mind the DNR generally favors
acquisition of land that is contiguous to existing DNR-
managed areas, such as state parks and recreation areas,
state game areas or state forests. Acquisition of privately
held inholdings surrounded by DNR-owned land also is a top
priority.
The MNRTF provides financial assistance to local
governments and the DNR to purchase lands for outdoor
recreation or protection of natural resources and for the
appropriate development of land for public outdoor
recreation. The MNRTF is supported by revenues from the
development of state-owned oil and gas resources. Only the
state and local governments may apply to the MNRTF for grant
assistance to acquire property, however, any individual,
group or organization may nominate land for DNR
consideration.

Individuals wishing to submit a nomination must
complete a short form (PR1909) which can be obtained from
the DNR Grants Administration Division. The nomination
process is only one way individuals can make the DNR aware
of land acquisition opportunities. They also may contact a
land-managing division directly at any time. In addition,
since local governments also are eligible to seek MNRTF
grant assistance, individuals are encouraged to contact
local governments in the area of the property to determine
their interest in acquiring the property.

To request a nomination form or receive other recreation
grant information, contact the DNR Grants Administration
Division at 517-373-9125. A 24-hour voice mail line, 517-
373-2724, also is available.
