E-M:/ MAY 10th: HOGS, LOGS AND BOGS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

While this may fall short of the alignment of all the planets with the
sun, the convergence of deadlines or hearings on three disparate
environmental topics on MAY 10th is worthy of some note.

 WEDNESDAY MAY 10 -

 Two deadlines and a Hearing:

HOGS: The deadline for comments on the Generally Accepted Agricultural
Management Practices (GAAMPS) on Odors and Site Selection Criteria is on
the 10th. The GAAMPS are the voluntary guideline called for under the
Right to Farm Act which are to be adhered to in order for farm operations
to be exempt from nuisance claims. Previous posts to Enviro-Mich by Patty
Cantrell of MLUI have raised the concerns about the draft GAAMPS, which
even as voluntary standards fall short of reasonable expectations for
protecting neighbors and communities from the effects of huge livestock
operations. Check out the Mich. Dept. of Agriculture webpage for a copy
 of the draft GAAMPS:

Written comments should be directed to:
        Dave Charney, Commission Liaison
        Michigan Department of Agriculture
        P.O. Box 30017
        Lansing, Michigan 48909

                  Or

        E-mail to charneyd@state.mi.us

BOGS: Comment period on the Empire Mine's application to destroy 87.3
acres of wetlands and 8,288 lineal feet of streams in order to expand
their iron mining operations near Marquette.

 Comments must be submitted to:

        Dept. of Env. Quality
        c/o Virginia Pennala
        184 US 41 E
        Negaunee, MI 49866
        FAX # 906-475-2061

File #99-3-163 Empire Iron Mining Partnership

LOGS: The final hearing of the Michigan Senate Appropriations Subcommittee
on Natural Resources on the DNR Budget bill, which harbors the Timber
Mandate for Michigan's State Forests. The hearing is scheduled for 1 P.M.,
in Room 404 of the State Capitol Building. It is expected that the bill
will be voted out of the Subcommittee at this meeting. Committee Members
can be called and urged to remove the timber mandate - see names and
 addresses below:

        Chairman, Senator George McManus 517-373-1725
        Senator Harry Gast 517-373-6960
        Senator Phil Hoffman 517-373-2426
        Senator Don Koivisto 517-373-7840
        Senator Ken DeBeaussaert 517-373-7315

ALL of these are important issues -- I hope you can take time to comment
 on one or all!
