Note that Stone Container in Ontonagon County is 9th on this statewide list with 30,479 pounds of toxic discharges to water. Stone's discharge permit is currently up for re-issuance. A draft permit has been published by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and proposes the following modifications: - Deletion of the authorization for the discharge of sanitary wastewater because Stone Container now discharges it's sanitary wastewater to the City of Ontonagon Wastewater Treatment Plant; - a small reduction in some of the BOD5 and total suspended solids limits for monitoring point 001A; - Elimination of monitoring for total copper because previous monitoring showed that it was not present at levels of concern; - Addition of a limit and monitoring in calendar years 2000 and 2004 for acute toxicity to confirm that toxicity requirements are being met on a continuing basis - Elimination of chronic toxicity testing because it has been replaced with acute toxicity testing; - elimination of the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan language because the requirements have been satisfied and the untreated discharges have been eliminated; - various revisions to update permit language.
