OFF-ROAD VEHICLE (ORV) GRANT APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR 2000-2001

LANSING--The Department of Natural Resources will be
distributing off-road vehicle (ORV) grant applications to
public agencies, nonprofit, incorporated clubs and
organizations and eligible county sheriff's departments in
June. Applications are available for grants to maintain
existing designated ORV trails, routes and use areas; repair
public lands damaged by inappropriate ORV use and develop
new ORV trails, routes and use areas. Grant funds also are
available to pay for liability insurance, leases or
easements. Grant funds are available to eligible county
sheriff's departments to enforce ORV regulations. Counties
that have either designated ORV trails or abandoned railroad
rights-of-way that are being converted into Michigan
Trailways are eligible for funding.
Priority will be given to grant applications that
address existing trail maintenance, restoration needs and
enforcement of ORV regulations on public land.
"We currently maintain more than 3,000 miles of
designated ORV trails and routes statewide," said Ed Hagan,
Acting Forest Management Division Chief. "We encourage
participation from user organizations and other public
agencies to help us maintain Michigan's great ORV trail
system."
Any public agency, eligible county sheriff's
department or nonprofit, incorporated club or organization
who wishes to apply for ORV grant assistance next year,
should contact the DNR Forest Management Division, Box
30452, Lansing, MI 48909-7952; 517-373-4175.
All applications must be returned to the Forest
Management Division by August 1.
