DNR OFFERS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
TO COMMUNITY FORESTRY PROGRAMS
LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Urban and Community Forestry Program offers financial
assistance to help local communities and community groups
with urban and community forestry projects.
The Community Forestry Grant Program is available for
urban and community forestry projects on non-federal public
lands or lands open to the public (not private property).
The purpose of the grant program is to develop local
forestry programs, nonprofit and volunteer forestry
activities and related educational efforts. It is not
intended as a substitute for routine tree programs or
maintenance.
Any non-federal unit of government or legal nonprofit
organization may apply. The deadline is
July 21. Approximately $140,000 in grant funds are available
on a competitive basis. This is a 50-50 cost-share match
program, which may not include federal funds as part of the
match. Funding is for projects that must begin by October 1,
2000, and be completed by September 15, 2001.
Eligible projects include:
* Local government programs, including staffing (students,
interns, etc.), tree ordinance development, tree inventory,
tree board formation and comprehensive community forestry
management planning (up to $20,000).
* Nonprofit programs, including staffing, program
development, volunteer training and project planning (up to
$10,000).
* Technology transfer or information and education projects,
including Arbor Day celebrations, urban and community
forestry workshops, youth programs, public service materials
and exhibits (up to $10,000).
* Public library and nature center resource material
acquisition projects to obtain current and new reference
materials for public use (maximum request $500).
* Tree planting projects on public land or land open to the
public (up to $4,000).
The Community Forestry Grant Program is sponsored by
the USDA Forest Service State and Private Forestry Program,
the Michigan Urban and Community Forestry Council and the
Michigan Department of Natural Resources Forest Management
Division.
