The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) recently
awarded Michigan State University one of 27 Sustainable Development
Challenge Grants from among nearly 1,000 applications. The award for
$249,522 will be used to develop a campus sustainability program on one of
the largest single campuses in the United States. The award was given to the
University Committee for a Sustainable Campus (UCSC), a recent collaborative
effort of students, staff and faculty which has been attempting to integrate
the operations, academic, research and outreach efforts of the
university toward sustainable learning for the past 18 months.

Terry Link, chair of the committee and a university
librarian and adjunct faculty in the
Bailey Scholars Program, believes the grant award "supports
the direction the committee has been working toward for the past 18 months.
We need to practice what we preach with more mindfulness", he said. Funds
will be used to have a full-time office for three years to develop linkages
between all partners in the MSU community and beyond. Seeking grants,
developing a university wide course on sustainability, encouraging more
research on campus into sustainability issues, highlighting achievements
and measuring and reducing the campus environmental footprint are all part
of the tasks ahead.

Building the collaborative atmosphere where knowledge from
the many sectors is shared across discipline, job status, and other
boundaries is a fundamental goal of the grant. Reaching beyond campus to our
local and national communities in building cooperation and learning from
each other is another fundamental objective of the program.
