Attention bird lovers and conservationists!

Volunteers Needed for Piping Plover Patrol * Summer 2000

The State Park Stewardship Program of the Michigan Department of Natural
Resources (MDNR), in cooperation with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
is once again organizing the Volunteer Piping Plover Patrol to help protect
this endangered shorebird through the education of state park guests.

Plover patrol volunteers are needed from May 26 through July 16 at
Wilderness and Leelanau State Parks. Fisherman's Island and Tawas State
Park will be included in the program if plovers choose to nest there this year.

The shores of the Great Lakes were once home to nearly 800 pairs of these
birds. Today, less than 32 nesting pairs remain in the entire state. Their
rapid decline is attributed to factors including habitat destruction, nest
disruption and predation. In 1986, the piping plover was placed on the
Federal Register and listed as endangered. A successful recovery, however,
will take time and require our help. The Plover Patrol program places
volunteers in the state parks where these birds are nesting at the critical
time when chicks are most vulnerable.

Volunteers can sign up for any date(s) between May 26 and July 16 and any
shift time between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

During those shifts, volunteers will interact with park visitors by
distributing piping plover information and answering questions.

For each eight-hour shift a volunteer works per nest site they may get a
free night of camping at that state park (subject to availability). They
will also receive an official piping plover T-shirt and button.

Those interested should contact:

Please Post this message where appropriate for other bird lovers and
conservationists to see both electronically and otherwise. If you received
this message and would rather not receive future volunteer opportunities
from the MDNR State Park Stewardship Program, please let me know. Thank you.
