E-M:/ Detroit Riverfront Casino Ballot Proposal

Enviro-Mich message from "Karen D. Kendrick-Hands" <kdkhands@voyager.net>

I received this announcement from a TRU list member: REAL is at TRU
coalition member. The Casinos on the Riverfront threaten the Dequindre Cut
rail line, the last rail access to downtown Detroit. Keeping the Casinos
off the river front will keep the Right of way intact. Please help them get
this issue on the ballot.

The Riverfront East Alliance (REAL) is circulating a petition to get the
riverfront casino issue on the fall ballot. The proposal states that
"...no gambling casino shall be located on the east riverfront of Detroit"
between Jefferson Avenue, the Detroit River, the Renaissance Center, and
East Grand Boulevard. 5,000 valid signatures are needed by Sunday, June 18th.

If you have not done so already, please sign up. There will be people
collecting signatures on Saturday morning at Eastern Market (beginning at
8:30 in front of Hirt Company). Additional volunteers are welcome.

Please also consider taking a petition and gathering more
signatures. Petitions can be picked up on:
* Friday, June 16th, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Christs Church on East
Jefferson at I375
* Saturday, June 17th, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Friends School at East
Lafayette and St. Aubin

Petitions can be dropped off at:
* Christ Church Detroit by 6:30 p.m. on Sunday (at the rear of the church)

Suggested locations for gathering signatures are:
* outside of the Detroit post office
* outside of grocery markets and shopping strips
* outside of banks
* Eastern Market
* Chene Park, Elliot Park, etc.
* Breakfast spots (Clique, IHOP, etc.)
* outside of the Detroit Public Library
* Alfred Brush Ford Park, on Lakewood St. at the river (off Jefferson); the
Creekside Community Development Corp's picnic is on Sunday from 1-6 pm.
(more than 1,000 people are expected to attend)
* Grand Prix locations - Belle Isle, Cobo/Hart Plaza (shuttle points),
pre-Prix or aprés-Prix hangouts, etc.

For additional information, contact Bob Jackman of REAL at
313/567-8221. Please forward this along to any and all who would be
willing to sign and/or circulate petitions. Finally, the following is a
press release for your info. Thanks for you help and support on this
important issue!
