DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE AUGUST 16 ON MACKINAW STATE FOREST

LANSING--The Department of Natural Resources Forest
Management Division will host an open house Wednesday,
August 16, to provide information and allow public comment
regarding the proposed forest management treatments for the
2002 Entry Year Compartments on the Pigeon River Country
Forest Management Unit (PRCFMU), which is part of the
Mackinaw State Forest.
The open house will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Pigeon
River Headquarters, approximately 13 miles east of
Vanderbilt on East Twin Lakes Road.
Each year foresters and biologists inventory one-tenth of
the forest. The information gathered includes size, age and
health of trees; wildlife and recreational use and need; and
social factors, such as proximity of the area to roads and
neighborhoods. This is an opportunity for interested people
to review proposed treatments and provide input to be used
for a final decision on those treatments. For this entry
year, proposed treatments include opening maintenance,
clearcuts, selective cuts and thinnings.
The PRCFMU includes state forest land in parts of Otsego,
Montmorency and Cheboygan counties. Compartments under
review this year are in Corwith and Charlton townships in
Otsego County and Forest, Walker and Nunda townships in
Cheboygan County.
A formal compartment review for the PRCFMU will be Thursday,
August 24, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Pigeon River Forest
Headquarters. Persons with disabilities needing
accomodations for these meetings should contact Mike Mang,
DNR Gaylord District Office, at 517-732-3541/ext. 5042, or
Joe Jarecki, Unit Manager, at 517-983-4101.
