E-M:/ North Carolina hog lagoon phaseout announcement

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

FOLKS: While here in Michigan we fight over whether permits will be
required for large scale livestock operations, look at what North
Carolina is doing --- Isn't Michigan worth as much as North Carolina?
N.C. Attorney General Mike Easley announced today that his office has
reached agreement with Smithfield Foods, the world's largest hog producer
and pork processer, to phase out open air hog lagoons and sprayfields in
North Carolina over the next 5 years and to replace them with alternative
technologies that meet strict environmental standards (dubbed
"Environmentally Superior Technologies"). Since its recent merger with
Murphy Farms, Smithfield owns an estimated 70% of North Carolina's 10
million hogs.
