DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE AUGUST 10 ON LAKE SUPERIOR STATE FOREST

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Forest
Management Division will be holding two open house meetings in
Kinchloe and Rexton to provide information and allow public comment
regarding proposed forest management treatments to be done in 2001 on
the Sault Forest Management Unit, which is part of the Lake Superior
State Forest. The two sessions will be hosted by the Sault Field
Office and the Naubinway Field Office. The Sault open house will be
held Wednesday, August 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Kinross Town Hall,
4884 W. Curtis Road, Kinchloe. Forest management activities in
Chippewa County are planned for Drummond Island, Superior, Kinross,
Dafter and Raber townships and Clark Township in east Mackinac
County. The Naubinway open house will be held Wednesday, August 30,
from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Rexton Township Hall, Church Street, Rexton.
Forest management activities in west Mackinac County are planned
Moran, Hudson, Hendricks, Garfield and Newton townships and Trout
Lake Township in west Chippewa County. Each year foresters inventory
one-tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes
size, age and health of trees; wildlife and recreational use and
need; and social factors, such as proximity of the area to roads and
neighborhoods. This is an opportunity for interested people to review
proposed treatments and provide input to be used for a final decision
on those treatments. It also gives people a chance to talk with
foresters and biologists about general issues of interest. The formal
compartment review to finalize prescriptions for these areas of the
Lake Superior State Forest is scheduled for September 6, beginning at
9 a.m. at the State Street Village Inn, 250 South State Street, St.
Ignace. For more information, contact Karen Rodock, Naubinway Field
Office, 906-477-6048, or Pat Hallfrisch, Sault Field Office, 906-635-
5281. Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for the
meeting should contact Rodock or Hallfrisch.
