E-M:/ State may need to pay back $25 million in Wildlife funds

Enviro-Mich message from anne.woiwode@sfsierra.sierraclub.org

An Associated Press article today by Nedra Pickler reports that a draft
federal audit of Michigan DNR's handling of wildlife funds and license fees
finds that the DNR may have to pay back $25.3 million in funds to the
USFish and Wildlife Service. According to the AP story, the draft audit
shows "those expenditures were not allowed under an agreement with the
federal government that says the state can spend the license revenue only
on 'activities necessary to manage Michigan's fish and wildlife oriented

I would certainly be interested for others on this list to post whatever
they specifically know about this. Reading between the lines of the
article, it appears that the AP was tipped off to this by the Governor's
office, who are ranting and raving about the draft audit when it is not
even available to the public for review. Normally a draft audit like this
is sent to the agency for its comments prior to the finalization, but it
appears the Govenor's office may be trying derail accountability by one of
the nation's largest wildlife agencies by short-circuiting the normal audit
and review process.
