DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE AUGUST 30 ON ATLANTA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Forest
Management Division will host an open house Wednesday,
August 30, to provide information and allow public comment
regarding the Atlanta Management Unit inventory and proposed
forest management for 2002 Entry Year Compartments.
The open house will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. at the DNR's
Atlanta Field Office, located at 13501 M-33, Atlanta.
Each year foresters inventory one-tenth of the state forest.
The information gathered includes size, age, and health of
trees; wildlife and recreational use and need; and social
factors such as proximity of the area to roads and
neighborhoods. This is an opportunity for interested people
to review the proposed treatments and to provide input to be
used for a final decision on those treatments. It also
gives people a chance to talk in general with foresters and
biologists about issues of interest.
Compartments under review this year in Montmorency, Presque
Isle, Alpena, and Cheboygan counties. Townships, which have
compartments under review, include Briley, Hillman,
Montmorency, Rust and Viennna in Montmorency County,
Sanborn, Long Rapids, Green and Wilson in Alpena County,
Allis, Bearinger, Bismarck and Ocqueoc in Presque Isle
County, and Benton and Grant townships in Cheboygan County.
A formal compartment review to finalize prescriptions for
these areas is scheduled for Thursday, September 7,
beginning at 9 a.m., at the Atlanta Field Office.
For more information, contact Dayle Garlock, DNR Atlanta
office, 517-785-4251.
Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for the
open house should contact Unit Manager Dayle Garlock at 517-
785-4251.
