E-M:/ anti-children's health bill tabled

Enviro-Mich message from Dave Dempsey <davemec@voyager.net>

The U.S. House Agriculture Committee yesterday pulled from its agenda H.R.
1592, a bill that would undo the children's health protection provisions of
the 1996 Food Quality Protection Act. The tabling of the bill followed
extensive pressure from children's advocates, who said the 1996 law is
needed to protect children from the health risks of exposure to pesticides
in food. According to a Washington Post article, the bill was literally
written by a lobbyist for the chemical industry. But members of Congress

Unfortunately, an amazing 234 members of the U.S. House and a majority of
Michigan's Congressional delegation have co-sponsored H.R. 1592, apparently
on the assurances that the bill was a "technical fix" needed to bridle an

Dingell, Ehlers, Hoekstra, Knollenberg, Smith, Stabenow, Stupak and Upton.
As these members return to Michigan following the conclusion of the current
session, citizens concerned about children's environmental health may wish
to inquire whether these Michigan delegation members will again co-sponsor
the bill, or will work to protect children's health, in 2001.
