DNR TO HOST TWO PUBLIC MEETINGS
ON GAYLORD FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host two
open houses, October 24 and 26, to provide information and allow
public comment regarding the Gaylord Forest Management Unit inventory
and proposed forest management for the 2002 entry year compartments.
The South Unit, which includes state forest land in Antrim,
Charlevoix and Otsego counties, will hold its open house October 24,
from 3 to 7:30 p.m., at the DNR Gaylord Field Office, located on M-32
about one mile west of I-75 in Gaylord. The North Unit, including
Cheboygan and Emmet counties, will hold its open house October 26,
from 3 to 7:30 p.m., at the DNR Indian River Field Office, located at
the corner of M-68 and Old 27 in Indian River.

Each year foresters and biologists inventory one-tenth of the state
forest. The information gathered includes size, age, and health of
trees; wildlife and recreational use and need; and social factors
such as proximity of the area to roads and neighborhoods. This is an
opportunity for interested people to review proposed treatments and
provide input to be used for a final decision on those treatments.
For this entry year various treatments have been proposed including
opening maintenance, clearcuts, selective cuts and thinnings. A
formal compartment review to finalize prescriptions for the South
Unit is scheduled for Monday, November 6, beginning at 9 a.m., at the
DNR Gaylord Operations Service Center. The compartment review for the
North Unit will be held on Wednesday, November 8, beginning at 9
a.m., at the Indian River Field Office. For more information, contact
Greg Gatesy in Gaylord at 517- 732-3541, or Steve Milford in Indian
River at 231-238-9313. Persons with disabilities needing
accommodations for the open house should contact Gatesy or Milford
for assistance.
