Gov. George W. Bush's state TNRCC environmental agency will likely look bad
on another environmental story to be aired tonight on the CBS Evening News.
CBS Evening News and reporter Maureen Maher will be airing a toxic Texas
story from Odessa on the Huntsman Polymers plant's lengthy smoke-flaring
episode polluting a black and Latino neighborhood along IH-20 in West Texas.

The agency is trying to do damage control after initially proposing only a
wimpy $3,500 fine and now is upping it to $79,200, but only after a bus
load of black and Latino residents went to Austin to protest before the
agency in March and then picketed in front of the Governor's Mansion

Benzene is one of the pollutants of concern that was emitted during the
flaring episode and detected at elevated hourly levels in a real-time gas
chromatographic monitor at the nearby Hays Elementary Magnet School in the
minority neighborhoods.

This toxic Texas story was triggered by the Vanity Fair magazine piece.
I used to inspect the plastics plant for the State of Texas a few years
ago, but Huntsman has taken the plant over going thru a major expansion in
production capacity. Flaring problems persist for a variety of reasons but
is the featured problem in this story.
